What is hub motor technology?

Wheel hub motor technology is also known as wheel mounted motor technology, its biggest feature is to integrate power, transmission and device into the wheel hub, so the mechanical part of electric vehicle is greatly simplified.

 

Wheel hub motor technology is not a new thing. As early as 1900, Porsche first produced electric vehicles equipped with wheel hub motors. In the 1970s, this technology was applied in the field of mine transport vehicles. For the wheel motor used in passenger cars, Japanese manufacturers have carried out the research and development of this technology earlier, and are currently in a leading position. International automobile giants including general motors and Toyota have also set foot in this technology. At present, there are also independent brand automobile manufacturers in China to develop this technology. In 2011 Shanghai auto show, Ruiqi X1 extended range electric vehicle adopted hub motor technology.

According to the rotor type of the motor, the drive system of hub motor is mainly divided into two types: inner rotor type and outer rotor type. The outer rotor type adopts the low-speed outer rotor motor, the maximum speed of the motor is 1000-1500r / min, there is no deceleration device, and the wheel speed is the same as that of the motor; while the inner rotor type adopts the high-speed inner rotor motor with fixed transmission ratio reducer, in order to obtain higher power density, the motor speed can be as high as 10000r / min. With the emergence of the more compact planetary gear reducer, the inner rotor hub motor is more competitive than the low speed outer rotor type in power density.
